Have you heard about vibe coding? It’s where beginners can create apps simply by crafting an AI prompt. Well, guess what? Microsoft is taking this concept a step further with its Office applications! Say hello to the new Agent Mode in Excel and Word, which can create intricate spreadsheets and documents just from your prompt! Plus, there’s the new Office Agent in Copilot chat, powered by Anthropic models, that can whip up PowerPoint presentations and Word documents using a “vibe working” chatbot.
“Today, we’re excited to introduce vibe working to Microsoft 365 Copilot with Agent Mode in Office apps and the Office Agent in Copilot chat,” says Sumit Chauhan, the corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Office Product Group. “Just like vibe coding has revolutionized software development, our latest reasoning models in Copilot bring incredible productivity for creating Office documents!”
Agent Mode in Excel and Word is like the supercharged version of Copilot that Microsoft has integrated into its Office apps. It’s designed to make those complex Excel features more accessible for everyone, not just the experts. “This isn’t just about getting simple quick answers; it’s about creating polished presentations and documents that are ready for the boardroom,” says Chauhan. “It’s work that a first-year consultant could pull off, but done in just a few minutes!”
So how does Agent Mode work? It takes complex tasks and breaks them into manageable steps, planning and reasoning as it goes along. Using OpenAI’s GPT-5 model, it simplifies every stage of document creation into actionable tasks. It’s like watching a smart automation tool in action, displaying everything it’s doing right in the sidebar!
Microsoft has been careful in adding AI features to Excel because the data involved supports some of the biggest business operations around the globe. Agent Mode is a game-changer! It empowers you to create sheets that are not just auditable, but also refreshable and verifiable,” Chauhan exclaims with enthusiasm. “We’ve invested a lot of effort into ensuring that the validation for all these sub-agents is really robust.”
And the results? Microsoft reports that Agent Mode in Excel boasts a 57.2% accuracy rate on SpreadsheetBench, a benchmark measuring how well an AI can edit real spreadsheets. This puts it ahead of Shortcut.ai and ChatGPT’s .xlsx-supporting agent, as well as Claude Files Opus 4.1. While it’s still a bit behind human accuracy, which is at 71.3%, it’s a fantastic step forward!
Over in Word, Agent Mode adds even more wow-factor beyond the current writing, rewriting, and summarization tools. “In Word, Agent Mode takes document creation to a whole new level, transforming it into a vibrant writing experience that feels interactive and conversational,” he adds. It’s your Copilot drafting content, suggesting improvements, and clarifying what’s needed during the document creation process.
You’ll be able to create a monthly report that pulls in data from past months, with Copilot summarizing key highlights and differences from earlier reports. “Copilot offers suggestions to keep everything flowing smoothly, making writing feel more like a fun conversation than a chore,” Chauhan adds.
Exciting times ahead with Microsoft’s innovations! Get ready to experience a new way of working!
Exciting news! Microsoft’s brand-new Office Agent is set to enhance your experience beyond just the Office apps, thanks to the Copilot chat feature. Powered by Anthropic models, this innovative tool can whip up complete PowerPoint presentations or Word documents in response to your chat prompts. “PowerPoint is one of the most popular tools for creating presentations, but over the past two years, AI has struggled to create impressive slides,” says Chauhan. “Office Agent changes that!”
With Office Agent, crafting structured PowerPoint decks becomes a breeze, all while it conducts web-based research and provides you with a live preview of your slides. Microsoft is eager to show how Office stands out in a sea of AI tools striving to generate documents, spreadsheets, and slide decks.
Chauhan explains that “Productivity is our DNA; we’re all about Office”. Nothing will beat the real one “While others might try to imitate us!”
This also marks another exciting entry for Anthropic AI models into Microsoft 365 apps and services. Microsoft is already leveraging the capabilities of this OpenAI alternative to enhance tools like GitHub Copilot and Copilot Studio, and now you can create Word and PowerPoint documents through Microsoft’s very own Copilot chat interface.
“We’re committed to OpenAI, but we’re also beginning to explore the strengths of different model families to find the best mix for our products,” Chauhan shares. “We’re keeping an eye on all the cutting-edge advancements.”
While OpenAI models continue to drive Microsoft’s AI initiatives within the Office apps, it certainly seems like Anthropic’s models are making their way to becoming key players in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Microsoft is utilizing Anthropic’s API to bring these fantastic features to Copilot chat, which operates on Amazon Web Services in the cloud. This might be why we haven’t yet seen Anthropic’s models fully integrated into the desktop versions of Office apps.
Great news for users! Agent Mode in Copilot for Excel and Word is launching today in the Frontier program for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers as well as Microsoft 365 Personal / Family subscribers. While the Excel and Word Agent Model will initially be available only in the web versions, desktop support is on its way. So, if you’re a Microsoft 365 Copilot customer or a Microsoft 365 Personal / Family subscriber in the US, get ready to dive into the excitement of Office Agent!
